Scope of Position:

  • Manage department to drive Corning Innovation, with focus areas of surface science; surface engineering, coatings, thin films, electrostatic charge science, plasma science/engineering, clean room processes, and more. This corporate engineering role serves all existing businesses, and supports projects at all stages of innovation with a concentration in the earlier stages. The organization serves a flexible base of resources and knowledge which facilitates rapid solution development and emphasizes strong technical competence.
  • The ideal candidate would have both a strong record of technical accomplishment, and managerial/leadership experience. Existing knowledge of experimental design, analytical methods, leadership will enable their team to operate efficiently and deliver results.
  • In addition to the technical fields noted above, knowledge in polymers, organic/inorganic coatings, inks, adhesives, resins, formal problem solving methods (DMAIC, KT), manufacturing, would be beneficial.

Day to Day
Responsibilities:

  • This position will collaborate with resources from various disciplines (research, development, engineering, manufacturing, characterization, analysis, etc) as well as different competencies in order to obtain results efficiently.
  • All aspects of functional management for department budget, labs, safety, etc.
  • Leadership development of supervisors & engineers within your organization; mentoring others
  • Set the strategy/vision for long term view of the department s capabilities, laboratory spaces and technologies.
  • Identify technology gaps; create new strategic initiatives to close them
  • Setting work priorities

Travel Requirements:

  • Some travel required, typically less than 25%; project dependent

Required Education and Years of
Experience:

  • PhD in relevant technical field preferred, MS will be considered; examples Materials Science, Polymer Physics, Chemical Engineering, etc.
  • 10
    years minimum total experience; >5 years management experience
