Scope of Position:

  • Focus will be development of robust, first/next generation process machine systems that provide significant competitive advantage to Corning s businesses, and / or enable new products and product lines (prototype and production capable machines). This position will support some or all of Corning Incorporated s divisions.
  • The individual will have the opportunity to be a member of cross-functional project sub-teams, on early innovation stage projects, through concept generation / certification, technology development, design / build, and start-up in manufacturing.

Role within group:

  • Individual will be part of a cross-functional project team, on early innovation stage projects, that delivers robust, first/next generation process machine systems through concept generation / certification, technology development, design / build, and start-up in manufacturing.

  • Focus will be on early stage automation but participation in machine design and controls is also possible.
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment and participate on a highly matrixed project team
  • Understand how to integrate commercially available technologies and processes to enable Corning to develop into robust next generation process equipment solutions.
  • Able to effectively leverage external machine builders and system integrators for detail design, build, and integration of later stages of machine system implementation.
  • Support the functional and operational integrity of design, estimating costs, defining project scope, budget and schedule as being part of a cross-functional project sub-team.

Day to Day
Responsibilities:

  • Interface and work with the Research, Development and Manufacturing teams that are involved in the innovation and manufacture of new products and machine systems for any of Corning s Divisions including Science and Technology (R&D).
  • Focus will be on the development of first generation /next generation automated process equipment.
  • Work with other project team members on solving difficult engineering related problems, understanding project related issues, and general process engineering and process understanding.
  • Utilize internal lab facilities and equipment to develop proof of concept prototypes.
  • Interface with outside suppliers on specifying and procuring various automation products, fixtures and machine components to support the projects they are involved in.
  • Interface with internal R&D and manufacturing customers and internal trades personnel to get the systems set-up and functional.
  • Individual must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Individual must work with other team members to investigate prior art and help document any Intellectual Property developed as part of their project activities.
  • Individual must work with other team members to document project results through internal reporting means.
  • Individual must present the projects they are involved with for review by peers, customers and managers.
  • Work as a team member/advisor during the development of new process equipment systems with system integrators and/or external sub-contractors.
  • Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the customer s requirements and standards.
  • Some project travel is expected and will depend upon the project portfolio

Education and
Experience:

  • B.S./M.S. in Mechanical/Robotic/Electrical Engineering
  • 0
    years experience in a mechanical engineering field

Required Skills:

Desired Skills:

  • Familiar with SolidWorks or other solid modeling packages
  • Familiar with Fanuc robot programming
  • Familiarity with RIA R15.06 Robot Safety Standard
  • Previous exposure to mechanical and electrical drawings and schematics
  • Experience with a diversity of programming environments
  • Hands on and a high level of mechanical aptitude.

Travel Requirements:

  • Estimated travel 10-30%, domestic and international.
  • Travel may be required during installation, debug, and start-up as well as for routine interaction with internal and external Customers and Suppliers.

Hours of work/work schedule/flextime:

  • Normal Business Hours (8 5, M F), however, work hours required to achieve project objectives most likely will exceed 40 hours per week.

    Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
