General: This is a blend between theory and hands-on position. The engineer will apply their skills in Cornings mid to later innovation stages. There will be a focus on moving impactful process controls technologies from development as well as identify and solve complex later stage (engineering and manufacturing) process related problems.
Scope of Position:
This is an individual position that requires strong technical curiosity, strong desire for technical leadership opportunities, the ability to learn from others and the willingness to share learning experiences
Design, develop and implement mid to late-stage process controls solutions for Engineering and Manufacturing processes, concentration on process controls design and implementation.
Develop and apply process controls skills to implement controls solutions ranging from PID to non-linear controls, model predictive control, and other classic and non-classic controls schemes
Work with process SMEs and apply process data analysis skills to gain fundamental understanding of manufacturing processes
Evaluate existing control strategies and propose enhancements
Work in multi-disciplined project teams.
Utilize industry standard tools
Documentation of designs and implementations
Generate Invention Disclosures
Day to Day
Responsibilities:
Work closely with experienced professionals to design, develop and implement mid to late-stage process controls solutions for manufacturing processes.
Facilitate the transfer of new process control technologies into manufacturing
Work closely with manufacturing to define appropriate platform for implementing process control solutions
Evaluate readiness of process control solutions from R&D
Technology/Knowledge transfer from R&D and corporate engineering group to worldwide plants
Develop deep process and equipment understanding
Conduct design of experiments (DOE) to gather process related data, and identify multi-variant relationships.
Education:
Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering with a concentration in Control theory.
Required Skills:
Strong understanding of control theory
0-5 years experience in Process Controls design and implementation.
Skills to implement solutions on intended hardware (PLCs, PCs, embedded controllers)
Understanding of modern controls design and their applications
Use of tools like MATLAB to perform data analysis, FFTs, control design, and controls system performance assessment
Strong communications skills that span from non-technical to very technical interactions

Adaptive Controllers
Model Predictive Controllers
Nonlinear control
Advanced frameworks for data and sensor validation, pattern recognition, and fault identification.
Database design and data mining / analysis tools
Multi-variant analysis (PCA, PLS)
